Noah's Arc School of Web Design

Posted by on

In the beginning there was me and my iMac. One of those bulbous lime green ones. And then there were clients. And because I was most excellent at what I did, there were more and more clients. You get the idea.

Noah's Arc School of Web Design cartoonI needed help, so I started hiring people. First a production assistant from Gordon Cooper Technology Center. Then a junior programmer fresh out of high school. Then an actual ‘degreed’ designer from Oklahoma Christian. Pretty soon, I had a fully-fledged web team.

Then the rain came (I’m using rain as a metaphor for lots of client work). We had built our web team well. We were proud that we could weather the storm. We were busy, dry and doing business. This went on for years. Then a competitor  hired away our designer. And it so wasn’t good.

We had this great team but no designer. Production slowed and our work was more challenging. So from that day forward, the old guy steering the ship decided: Two is better than one.

Fast forward to modern times at Back40 Design. We have 2 full teams of web developers:

  • 2 account executives
  • 2 web designers
  • 2 CSS developers
  • 2 web programmers
  • 2 project managers

I refer to this as the Noah’s Arc Philosophy of running a business.

If one developer is vacationing in France; we have another. If one designer is scheduled for maternity leave this May; we have another. If one programmer falls asleep at their desk; we have another. If one project manager falls down; the other can help them one up. That’s kinda biblical.

The ‘two-by-two’ concept works so well that when we designed our new office we built in a second conference room - so we can schedule simultaneous client meetings.

And we are continued to be blessed with rain. Also kinda biblical. Next week, I’ll blog on Adam and Eve and CSS.

OKC Web Design & Beyond

Posted by on

It's been a great year so far. While we often have website clients outside of Oklahoma, the beginning of 2013 has been a little out of the ordinary. This month we’ve had 6 out-of-state design projects start up. Our OKC web designers, developers and programmers are busy creating these out-of-state web and branding projects:

  • waterpark branding and website in Maine
  • waterpark website design in Texas
  • waterpark website design in Virginia
  • roofing company web design in Colorado
  • museum association website design in Illinois
  • commercial real estate developer in Indiana

FYI, all three of the waterpark websites projects are unrelated; all with different owners. Seems we are the waterpark web designers of choice.

Though the majority of our projects are Oklahoma and Oklahoma City website design projects, it's nice to see projects come in from different parts of the country. As best we can tell, our search engine optimization (SEO) efforts are getting us these great gigs. That, and the awesome power of referrals.
